David Shaw was an assistant on the Baltimore Ravens in the fall of 2005 when he heard about the most unlikely upset: UC Davis 20, Stanford 17. The Cardinal have come so far since that stunning loss to a lower-tier California school that Shaw sees no reason to talk about it now. Instead, he is focused on taking the two-time defending Pac-12 champions even further, starting Saturday when No. 11 Stanford opens its season against an overmatched Aggies team. Stanford Team Report Aug 26, 2014

Stanford has high hopes again this season, but first the Cardinal has a score to settle.

Stanford will open the season at home against UC Davis on Aug. 30. The Cardinal and Aggies have met only twice in the long history of their respective universities. The Cardinal beat the Aggies 59-0 way back in 1932, but UC Davis handed Stanford a stunning 20-17 loss in 2005.

That loss sent Stanford reeling toward a 5-6 finish under former coach Walt Harris, but this is not likely to be that type of season. Stanford has enjoyed a renaissance since UC Davis last came to town. Players are eyeing a spot in the inaugural College Football Playoff and a shot at a national championship.
